Strathmeyer Forests, Inc., the parent company, took root early in the 20th century. Before beginning to use any systematic tree farming techniques, Charles H. Strathmeyer relied on selling wild evergreen trees at the Strathmeyer Grocery and Meat Store on Philadelphia Street. In 1932 his son, Charles W. Strathmeyer, began planting pine tree seed in a nursery in northern York County. These would become the first cultured Christmas trees grown in the area. Fred Strathmeyer, the son of Charles W., established the company’s modern nursery and guided further growth in the Christmas tree industry. Fred’s children, Fred Jr., Gerrit, Robin, Tim, and Brian, expanded the business to include balled and burlap material – a packaging convenience that increased the company’s customer base. The adage “strength in numbers” certainly applies to Strathmeyer Forests, Inc., which, through an ongoing effort of family cooperation, has grown to a new level, with several members of the next generation involved in continuing the tradition.
